Question
forgetful frank placed 30.0 mL of a liquid in a graduated cylinder with a mass of 89.450g when empty. When frank placed a metal bolt with a mass of 15.434g into the cylinder, the volume of the liquid rose to 35.7mL. Frank was aked to calculate the density of the liquid and of the metal bolt from his data, but he forgot to obtain the mass of the liquid. He was told that if he found the mass of the cylinder containing the liquid and the bolt, he would have enough data for his calculations. He did so and found its mass to be 130.934g. Calculate the density of the liquid and of the metal bolt.
Please and thank you
Explanation / Answer
Solution :-
Mass of liquid = total mass - (mass of bolt + mass of empty cylinder )
= 130.934 g – (15.434 g + 89.450 g)
= 26.05 g
Volume of metal bolt = total volume – volume of liquid
= 35.7 ml – 30.0 ml
= 5.70 ml
Density of liquid = mass of liquid / volume of liquid
= 26.05 g / 30.0 ml
= 0.8683 g /ml
Density of metal bolt = mass of bolt / volume of bolt
= 15.434 g / 5.70 ml
= 2.708 g /ml
