Question
Copper hydroxide is only very slightly soluble in water. I am not sure how to proceed with this question? 2. Copper hydroxide is only very slightly soluble in water Cu(OH)2(s) Cu2 (aq) +2OH-(aq) . Formulate the expression for the equilibrium constant, Ksp, for the above reaction. a. it is possible to dissolve significant amounts of Cuo is possible to dissolve significant amounts of Cu(OH)2 in solutions in which the concentration of either Cu or OH is very, very small. Explain, using Ksp, why this is the case. b. It Explain why Cu(OH)2 might have very appreciable solubility in 1 M HCI. (Consider the effect of Reaction 3 on the Cu(OH)2 solution reaction.) c.Explanation / Answer
a)
Ksp = [Cu+2] [OH-]^2
b)
Cu(OH)2 <---------------------> Cu+2 + 2OH-
according to lechatliers principle . on increase in concentration of reactants the reactionshifts to forward, on increasing the concentration of product the reaction shifts to backward. if we take little amount of products Cu+2 or OH- the reaction shifts towards forward direction
c)
Cu(OH)2 ------------------------->Cu+2 + 2OH
HCl----------------------> H+ + Cl-
from HCl H+ ion react with OH - forms water
H+ + OH- ---------------> H2O
that means product side concentration decreases the reaction shift to forward direction that means solubility increases
