Question

6)Alex and Leroy have been tied up in a wrestling hold for 30 minutes and neither is willing to relinquish their position as winner. It is obvious that both are exhausted. Infer how many molecules of ATP the muscle cells in the biceps would be making from four molecules of glucose at this point.

A)From four molecules of glucose, there would be a net gain of 136 ATP molecules. Alex and Leroy’s bodies would be in anaerobic respiration because their bodies are exhausted from wrestling for 30 minutes. Glycolysis is an anaerobic process where the glucose is broken down and forms pyruvate with the use of two molecules of ATP, leaving a net of two ATP molecules.

B)For every four molecules of glucose produced in the biceps, there will be 64 molecules of ATP. This is also stated to be a 2:1 ratio. Since the boys have been in a match for 30 minutes, they have been using their muscle fibers to the extreme, and now both are going through anaerobic glycolysis. This process is almost, if not exact to the flight or fight situation in which the body has to produce more ATP in order to keep up a good stamina in a fight against a predator.

C)From four molecules of glucose, there would be a net gain of 128 ATP molecules. Alex and Leroy’s bodies would be in aerobic respiration because their bodies are exhausted from wrestling for 30 minutes. Glycolysis is an aerobic process where the glucose is broken down and forms lactic acid with the use of four molecules of ATP.

Explanation / Answer

During the exercise and in the exertion period, the cells are under low oxygen supply. That use anaerobic respiration. During the exercise, there is only anaerobic glycolysis process which will produce only 2 ATP but after stopping the exercise or in exertion period the lactate from anaerobic glycolysis will undergo cori cycle where it convert into pyruvate. That pyruvate will undergo in Krebs cycle and then produce 32-34 ATP from one glucose molecule. Therefore, the net gain of ATP would be (32 -34)+ 2 ATP from anaerobic glycolysis= 34 to 36 ATP. The net production from four glucose molecules = 4 x 34 =136 or 4x 36 = 144. The option has only 136 ATP. Therefore, the first option is correct.
