Question

1)The following two isomers of C3H7NO exist in equilibrium with each other in solution: 8) If Kc = 0.57 at 25°C and the initial concentration of the reactant is 0.50 M and the product is 0.70 M, what are the concentrations at equilibrium?

2)Phosphorus pentachloride decomposes to phosphorus trichloride at high temperatures according to the equation:

PCl5(g) PCl3(g) + Cl2(g)
At 250° 0.125 M PCl5 is added to the flask. If Kc = 1.80, what are the equilibrium concentrations of each gas?

Can someone please help me by explaining these questions by solving them as simple as possible. Thank you,

Explanation / Answer

Part-1

C3H7NO <-------> C3H7NO

I 0.5 0.7

C -x +x

E 0.5-x 0.7+x

0.57 = [0.7+x] / [0.5-x]

0.285 - 0.57x = 0.7 + x

1.57x = -0.415

x = -0.415 / 1.57 = -0.265

equilibrium concentration of

reactant = 0.5- (-0.265) = 0.765 M

product = 0.7+x = 0.7-0.265 = 0.435 M

Part B

PCl5 (g) <----> PCl3 (g) + Cl2 (g)

I 0.125 0 0

C -x +x +x

E 0.125-x +x +x

Kc = [Cl2] [PCl3] / [PCl5]

1.8 = [x][x] / [0.125-x]

x2 + 1.8x -0.225 = 0

solve the quadratic equation

x = 0.1173 M

equilibrium concentration of

[PCl5] = 0.125-x = 0.125 - 0.1173 = 0.0077

[PCl3 ] = x = 0.1173 M

[Cl2] = x = 0.1173 M
