Question
1. Glucose + ATP ---> glucose 6-phosphate + ADP + H+
2. Glucose 6-phosphate <----> fructose 6-phosphate
3. Fructose 6-phosphate + ATP ----> fructose 1,6-bisphosphate + ATP + H+
4. Fructose 1,6-bisphosphate <-----> dihydroxyacetone phosphate + glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate
5. Dihydroxyacetone phosphate <-----> glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate
6. Glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate + Pi + NAD+ <-----> 1,3 bisphosphoglycerate + NADH +H+
7. 1,3 bisphosphoglycerate + ADP <-------> 3-phosphoglycerate + ATP
8. 3-phosphoglycerate <-----> 2-phosphoglycerate
9. 2-phosphoglycerate <------> phosphoenolpyruvate + H2O
10.Phosphoenolpyruvate +ADP + H+ -----> pyruvate + ATP
As an exercise- add the 10 reactions of glycolysis to get or prove the net (overall) reaction for glycolysis. To get the right answer you have to "multiply by 2" starting with reaction 6 of glycolysis. So, write out all 10 reactions-each on a separate line, complete and balanced. Then, either strike out compounds that occur as both reactants and products and add up the rest. OR, you can accumulate all reactants to the left of an arrow and all products to the right of an arrow and then eliminate all reactants and products in common, showing the result as the final, net or overall reaction of glycolysis The point is that simply listing 10 reactions does not prove the overall reaction. You have to "do the math" to create such a proof. Put another way, when the text gives an overall reaction, how do you know that it's right. Sometimes it might not be!! An earlier edition or our text (as good as it is) had just such an error- an overall reaction that was simply wrongExplanation / Answer
1. Glucose + ATP ---> glucose 6-phosphate + ADP
2. Glucose 6-phosphate ----> fructose 6-phosphate
3. Fructose 6-diphosphate + ATP ----> fructose 1,6-diphosphate + ADP
4. Fructose 1,6-diphosphate -----> dihydroxyacetone phosphate + glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate
5. Dihydroxyacetone phosphate -----> glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate
6. Glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate + Phosphate + NAD+ ----> 1,3 diphosphoglycerate + NADH +H+
7. 1,3 diphosphoglycerate + ADP -------> 3-phosphoglycerate + ATP
8. 3-phosphoglycerate -----> 2-phosphoglycerate
9. 2-phosphoglycerate ------> 2-phosphoenolpyruvate + H2O
10.2-Phosphoenolpyruvate +ADP -----> pyruvate + ATP
Overall reaction:
Glucose + Fructose 6-diphosphate + Phosphate + NAD+ ----------> fructose 6-phosphate + glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate + + NADH +H+ + H2O + pyruvate
