Question
Consider the TLC analysis of the reaction in fig. 1 below in order to answer questions 14-19. Are spots A_1 and B_1 pure compounds? Briefly explain. Would you consider spot C_1 to consist of a pure compound at time t = 15 min? Briefly explain Which two compounds (A-C) would you expect to be most interactive with the solvent? Briefly explain Which two compounds (A-C) would you expect to be most interactive with the stationary phase? Briefly explain Give the relative polarity in decreasing order for compounds A-C because [CH_3(CH_2)_4 CH_3] is used as the eluting solvent. Would you consider the reaction between A & B for spot C_1 to be over at time t = 15 mins and at t = 6 hrs? Briefly explain
Explanation / Answer
14. A, B are pure compounds. Because after their run in mobile phase, they are appeared as single compound for each. If any one is impure then its corresponding spot dissociats in to two or more compouns (two or more dots) after its run in mobile phase.
15. At the time of 15 min, the reaction spot (C1) contains A and B along with the product C. Therefore reaction is incomplete.
16. Among three spots (A-C), B and C are travelling more on the TLC plate, that means these two spots interacting more with mobile phase (solvent).
17.Among three spots (A-C), A and B are fimly bound to stationary phase as we can see on TLC. Thats why they are travel less distance on TLC.
18. TLC plate contains SiO2 (silica) which is polar substance. Organic compounds are having intermediate polarity. Among the compounds, relatively high polar compounds bind more firmely on TLC, than the low polar compounds. After spot run in solvent, compounds travel less distance on TLC are more polar compounds. The compounds which travel more distance on TLC are known as low polar compounds.
19. Ater 6 h of the reaction, in spotting of C1 on TLC and after its run, A an B are disappered. So, we can say after 6 h reaction said to be complete.
Best wishes.
