Question

I'm not sure how to do the following questions with the drug Alprazolam C17H13ClN4

1. You wish to prepare 50.0mL of 2.30×10^-2 M solution of your drug. Describe how to prepare this solution from the pure drug and deionized water. Analytical balances and volumetric flasks are available to you. (Assume that your drug dissolves in water, at least to the extent necessary for this problem.) Use complete sentences in your description of the solution preparation process. Show any required calculations you would need to make.

2. Calculate how many milligrams of the drug are contained in 2.0mL of a 3.0% (wt/vol) solution of your drug.

Explanation / Answer

Molecular weight of the given drug Alprazolam C17H13ClN4 = (17 *12) + (13 * 1) + 36 + (14 * 4) = 309

We need to prepare a 50.0mL of 2.30×10^-2 M solution.

2.30×10^-2 M solution contains 2.30×10^-2 * 309 g = 7.107 g in 1000 mL water.

Since, 50 mL solution is needed, hence required amount of the drug = 7.107 * 50/1000 g = 0.3553 g

So, 0.3553 g of the drug is taken by using an analytical balance and transferred directly into a 50 mL volumetric flask. Then water is added ~50 mL to dissolve the drug and made upto the 50 mL volume mark in the flask in order to get the required strength.

2. 3.0% (wt/vol) solution means 3 g drug is present in 100 mL of total solution volume.

hence, 2.0 mL of solution contains 3 * 1000 * 2/100 mg = 60 mg
