Question

I need help calculating the following things:

Theoretical Reaction Potential?

Percent Error from theoretical potential?

Zn/Zn^2+ 1.0 M || Cu^2+ 1.0 M/Cu In the space below write the equations for the two half reactions and sum them appropriately to calculate the standard reaction potential for 1.0 M voltaic cells. Show the overall net ionic equation for this reaction. Write the expression for Q for this redox reaction. In the space below show a calculation using the Nernst equation to determine the theoretical reaction potential for the Zn/Zn^2+ 0.1 M || Cu^2+ 0.1M/Cu standard cell. Observed potential for the Zn/Zn^2+ 0.1 M \ Cu^2+ 0.1M I Cu Percent error from theoretical potential 0.1 M C_uSO_4 and unknown ZnSO_4 code and potential Unknown concentration of ZnSO_4 (Use **observed potential for the Zn/Zn^2+ 0.1 M || Cu^2+ 0.1M I Cu cell as the E degree in the calculation and note the number of significant figures given on reagent bottles.)

Explanation / Answer

reduction potential of Cu2+ = -0.762 V

Reduction potential of Zn2+ = 0.339 V

Eo = 0.339 - (-0.762) = 1.101 V

[Zn2+] = 0.1 M

[Cu2+] = 0.1 M

Nernst equation:

EMF = Eo - 0.06/(2) log[Zn2+]/[Cu2+]

= 1.101 - 0.03 log 1

= 1.101 - 0 = 1.101 V

Theoretical EMF = 1.101 V

Observed EMF = -1.03 V

% error = [(1.101-1.03)/1.101]*100 = 6.45 %
