Question

l.Alkmol fuel mixture burns with 130% 30% theoretical dry air and is composed of 60% CH4 C2H6, and 10% N2. Determine: a) The balanced reaction equation b) Molecular weight of fuel (kg/kmol) c) Air-fuel ratio (kg air/kg fuel) 2. Consider the complete, stoichiometric combustion of 1 kmol of natural gas made up of 40% CsH12, 35% CH4, and 25% C3H8. The reactants and products are at 25 °C and 1 atm. Assuming the water in the product is in vapor form, determine a) The balanced reaction equation b) Enthalpy of combustion (kJ/kmol fuel)

Explanation / Answer

1. a) CH4 and C2H6 react with O2. While N2 is inert.

CH4+2O2=CO2+2H2O

C2H6+7/2O2=2CO2+3H2O

b) in 1 kmol fuel we have 0.6 kmol CH4, 0.3 kmol C2H6 and 0.1 kmol N2.

Average molar mass of fuel would be: (0.6×16+0.3×30+0.1×28)=21.4g

c) Kg of fuel:21.4 Kg

Kg of air:130×21.4/100=27.82 Kg

Air-fuel ratio: 27.82÷21.4=1.3
