Question

Experimentation:

1-Cut the rubber band to make a rubber strip.

2-Fill the jug half-full of tap water

3-Tie the end of the rubber strip to the jug, and the other end to the door handle.

4-Measure the initial length of rubber strip when it hangs to the door handle with the jug

5-Use one cube of ice on each side of the rubber strip and cool the length of the rubber band by rubbing one ice cube on each side simultaneously. Then, measure the length of the rubber strip.

6-Allow the rubber strip to come to room temperature.

7-Heat the rubber band using the blow dryer. Move the blow dryer up and down the length of the rubber band to heat it. Then, measure the length of the rubber strip.

8-Repeat steps 5 to 7 three times or more until the results are consistent.

1.Explain at a molecular level what most substances do when heated and cooled.

2.Relate what happened in terms of entropy. Be sure to include something about temperature and entropy.)

3.What would you expect to happen to the temperature of a rubber band if you suddenly stretched it?

4.How about if you slowly stretched a rubber band and then suddenly let it contract?

5.Shrink- wrap uses heat (without melting it) to seal something in a special type of plastic. Explain how this must work.

Explanation / Answer

(1) On cooling the length of the rubber is increased where as on heating the length of the rubber band decreased.

(3) on cooloing because the length increased entopy also increased where as on heating length decreased so entropy decreased.

(4) temp. decreases

(5) temp. increases

(6) while heating as its lengths decreased so, seals the packing.
