Question
Chem: Thermo/ElectrochemistryPart A: what is the coefficient of the permanganate ion when the following equation is balanced?
Part B: what is the oxidation number of manganese in the MnO4 1-ion? Question 19 (1 point) What is the coefficient of the permanganate ion when the foltowing equation is balanced? What is the coeficient of the permanganate ion when the following equation is balanced? MnO4-+ Br- Mn2+ + Br2 (acidic solution) ab Save Question 20 (1 point) What is the oxidation number of manganese in the Mno41- ion? +7 abs
Explanation / Answer
Oxidation Half
2Br- ------> Br2 + 2e-
Reduction Half
MnO4- + 8H+ + 5e- --------> Mn(2+) + 4H2O
Hence there are 5e-'s in the reduction half and 2 electrons involved in the oxidation half, so multiply the first reaction by 5 and second by 2 to cancel electrons
Hence the coefficient will be 2 for permangnate ion
Answer=2
