Question
When a few drops of sodium fluoride solution are added to a solution containing iron (III) ions a colourless solution is obtained.
Fe3+(aq) + 6 F-(aq) FeF63-(aq) Pale yellow colourless
However, when a few drops of sodium chloride are added to a solution containing iron (III) ions, a pale colour deepening as more sodium chloride is added.
Fe3+(aq) + 4 Cl-(aq) FeCl4-(aq) Pale yellow intense yellow
Predict what will occur if a solution of sodium fluoride is added to the solution prepared from the iron (III) and sodium chloride solutions. Justify your prediction in terms of Le Chatelier’s principle.
Explanation / Answer
RECTIONS WITH SOLUTIONS CONTAINING IRON(2) IONS This time we can talk onlyabout the reactions nof chlorine, bromineand iodinewhenever solutions of flourine reactwithwater and does not convert ferric(3)ions so it does not change colour chlorine and bromine are strong enough oxidisingagents to oxidise iron(2)ions in the process the chlorine is reduced to chloride ions the bromine to bromide ion so chlorine or bromine changed to palegreen iron(2) ions to paleyellow or pale orange iron(3)ions finally i will say that flourine have strong oxidising proprty so it react with water but not for iron ions due to that it does not change colour
