Question
What two quantities are needed to determine the density of a solid? How could you determine the volume of an irregularly shaped solid? Name two flammable solvents used in this experiment. Briefly explain how to measure the melting point of a solid. What is the proper method of disposal for a melting point capillary? What two physical properties are used in this experiment to determine the identity of an unknown? What properties of water make it a suitable liquid to determine the volume of each piece of aluminum in the density determination?Explanation / Answer
Solved first four problems, post one more question to get the remaining answers
1) Density is defined as mass/volume
Hence we need to find the mass of the object and volume of the object in order to find its density
2) To find the volume of the object, just keep the beaker with some amount of volume, now place the object in the beaker fill with water
Note the initial and final readings
Volume of the object = Mass of water displaced = Final Volume - Initial Volume
3) All alcohols are flammable, hence it can be methanol and ethanol
4) We can fill a capillary tube with the solid crystals and start gradually increasing the temperature at the end point of capillary tube in order to find the melting point of the solid
