Nane Date Laboratory Instructor Abbreviated 32 Pre-lalb Qualitative Analysis Scheme Questions efore b answer the following questions. eginning Part I of this experiment in the laboratory, you should be able to I. What are the symbols and charges of the group I catio ns? 2. Which chloride salt is insoluble in cold water but soluble in hot water? 3. Which chloride salt dissolves in aqueous NH3 How could you distinguish the following? (a) BaCl, from AgC 4. (b) HNO, from HC 5. Complete and balance the following eqaations (a) AgCls)+NH(ag) (b) Pt 2+(ag)+Cr042-(aq) (c) Hg Ch(6)+ NH(ag) 461 Copyig 2015 Pan Education, c

Explanation / Answer

(1) Symbols and charges of group 1 cations:

Li+ = lithium ion

Na+ = sodium ion

K+ = potassium ion

Rb+ = rubidium ion

Cs+ = caesium ion

(2) Lead (II) chloride is insolble in cold water but soluble in hot water.

(3) Silver chloride salt in insoluble in water but soluble in ammonia due to the formation of soluble comple ion.

AgCl (s) + NH3 (aq.) -------------> [Ag(NH3)2]Cl (aq.)

(4) (a) Addition of sodium hydroxide solution froms a brown precipitate of silver oxide with AgCl, but forms no precipitate with BaCl2.

2 NaOH (aq.) + 2 AgCl (s) -------------> Ag2O (s) (brown) + H2O (l) +2 NaCl (aq.)

2 NaOH (aq.) + BaCl2 (aq.) ------------> Ba (OH)2 (aq.) + 2 NaCl (aq.)

(b) Addition of little amount of AgNO3 solution froms AgCl insoluble precipitate with HCl but forms no precipitate with HNO3.

AgNO3 (aq.) + HCl (aq.) -------------> AgCl (s) + HNO3 (aq.)

AgNO3 (aq.) + HNO3 (aq.) ----------> no precipitate.

(5) (a) AgCl (s) + NH3 (aq.) -------------> [Ag(NH3)2]Cl (aq.)

(b) Pb2+ (aq.) + CrO42- (aq.) --------------> PbCrO4 (s) yellow precipitate

(c) Hg2Cl2 (s) + 2 NH3 (aq.) --------> Hg + HgNH2Cl + NH4Cl

(d) Ag(NH3)2+ (aq.) + H+ (aq.) + Cl-(aq.) -----> AgCl (s) + NH4+ (aq.)

(6) The unknown solution does not have silver ion.

(7) To remove soluble impurities which are prsent along with precipitate.

(8) by centifusing the one of the componants.
