Question
the oxidation number of each element, and determine what is axidized and reduced, and the oxidizing and reducing agents in the following reactions b. Zn(s) + Cusods) ZnSOdaq) + Cu(s) A 20.0mL sample of HCI of unknown concentration is titrated (reacted) with a 0.197M NaOH solution, If this sample of acid (HCI) required 38.7ml of the NaOH to reach the endpoint, Ha (aq) NaOH (aq) Naa (aq) H2O + + a. What is the concentration (Molarity, M) of the HCI solution? b. If the total quantity of HCI was originally 2.5L, what mass of HCI is present? What is the oxidation number of each element in the followingExplanation / Answer
Ans 1 :
a) The oxidation numbers :
Mg = 0
Br in Br2 = 0
Mg in MgBr2 = +2
Br in MgBr2 = -1
Mg got oxidised
Br got reduced
Mg is the reducing agent
Br is oxidising agent
b)
Reactants :
Zn = 0
Cu = +2
S = +6
O = -2
Products :
Zn = +2
S = +6
O = -2
Cu = 0
So Zn got oxidised and Cu got reduced
So Cu is the oxidising agent and Zn is reducing agent.
c) reactants :
Pb = +2
S = -2
H2 = 0
products :
Pb = 0
H in H2S = +1
S = -2
So Pb got reduced and H got oxidised
then Pb is the oxidising agent and H is the reducing agent
