1=lowest 4=highest Question 9 Consider the following data on some weak acids and weak bases: acid base Ka name formula Kb name formula hypochlorous acid HCIO 3.0x0ethylamine C,H,NH264x 104 nitrous acid HNO 4 methylamine CH,NH2 44x10 Use this data to rank the following solutions in order of increasing pH. In other words, select a "l next to the solution that will have the lowest pi, a 2: next to the solution that will have the next lowest pH, and so on. solution pH 0.1 M NaBr choose one 0.1 M CH NH38r. choose one 0.1 M KNO choose one choose one 0.1 M NaCIOExplanation / Answer
Of the four given salts,
1.NaBr is a neutral salt as it is formed from a strong acid HBr and stong base NaOH,so its pH lies around 7.
2.Ch3Nh3Br is a weakly acidic as it is formed from a strong acid HBr(hydrobromic acid) and a weak base Ch3Nh2(methylamine),so its pH is less than 7.
3.KNo2 is weakly basic as it is formed from a strong base KOH and a weak acid HNo2(nitrous acid),so its pH is more than 7.
4.NaClO is also weakly basic as it is formed from a strong base NaOH and a weak acid HClO(hypochlorous acid) but it is slightly more basic than KNo2 as NaOH is a stronger base than KOH,so its salt is more basic and so will have pH more than KNo2.
so,0.1 NaBr - 2
0.1 Ch3Nh3Br - 1
0.1 KNo2 - 3
0.1 NaClO - 4
