Question

Consider the reaction N,O, ()2NO, (g. Determine the temperature at which the equilibrium mixture with a total pressure of 1.00 atm will contain twice as much NO: as NO. 8) Use a table of standard reduction potentials to complete each of the following. (a) Circle the best reducing agent in the list: Hg (l) ; Mno."(ac) ; Hg,.. (aq) ; Mn (s) ; Sn.. (aq): Cu (s) (b) Which is the best oxidizing agent under standard conditions? F (aq) ; Cl: (g);MnO. (aq);CrO (a) ;Zn (s) (e) If a piece of nickel wire is placed in a 1.0 M Zn solution, will a spontaneous reaction occur? Why or why not? (d) What are the electrolysis products of aqueous cobalt(|I) sulfate? (e) Calculate the solubility product constant for copper(Il) hydroxide, Cu(OH): at 25 °C. (In addition to the SRP table, you will need to use the Nernst equation.) 9) Balance the reaction MnO, (a) + Br (a) MnO: (s) + BrO, (aq), both in acidic and in basic solution.

Explanation / Answer

a. The best reducing agent is MnO4-(aq).

b. The best oxidizing agent is Cr2O72-(aq).

c. Zn is a stronger reducing agent than Ni. So a Ni wire in Zn2+ solution will not be reduced to Ni2+. There will be no reaction.

d. From electrolysis of cobalt(II) sulphate, cobalt will be deposited at the electrode and sulphuric acid will be liberated in the solution.

9. In acidic solution,

2MnO4- + Br- + 2H+ = 2MnO2 + BrO3- + H2O

In basic solution,

2MnO4- + Br- + H2O = 2MnO2 + BrO3- + 2OH-
