Question

K 9 of 12 (> Part A Imagine that you have a 6.50 L gas tank and a 3.50 L gas tank. You need to fill one tank with oxygen and the other with acetylene to use in conjunction with your welding torch. If you fill the larger tank with oxygen to a pressure of 135 atm, to what pressure should you fill the acetylene tank to ensure that you run out of each gas at the same time? Assume ideal behavior for all gases. Express your answer with the appropriate units. View Available Hint(s) P307.125 atm Submit Previous Answers incorrect; Try Again; 4 attempts remaining

Explanation / Answer

In given problem, larger tank is filled with O2, and P1 = 135 atm, V1 = 6.5. Whereas, small tank will be filled with acetylene having V2=3.5L.

To make both gases to run for same time it would required same number of moles of gases to be filled in each tank.

Hence, P1V1 = nRT and P2V2 = nRT

Thus, P1V1 = P2V2

P2 = P1V1 / V2 = (135 atm*6.5 L) / 3.5L = 250.0 atm

So to finish both the gases at same time, we need to fill small tank with acetylene at 250atm.
