Question
6. DIscussion (1) During the calculation of 1 mole volume of carbon atoms, why we use density of diamond rather than that of graphite? (2) Avogadro's number is a conversion factor between moles and number of molecules. Molar mass is a conversion factor between moles and mass of molecules. Assume a person counted the number of gold atoms, one atom per a second for 80 years. Did he/she count the number of gold atoms that can be measured by usual balance? (molar mass of gold is 197.0 g/mol) ExplainExplanation / Answer
1. Since diamond is more pure form of C-12 rather than graphite, the same is used for density calculations.
2.
Total no. of Au atoms = 80*36524*60*60 = 2522880000
Total moles = atoms/ Na = 4.1894 * 10-15
Hence mass of Au = 8.2532 * 10-12 grams
which looks like impossible to be measured by usual balance.
