IV. Post-Laboratory Assignment 1. Using your work in Pre-Lab Question 1 as a guide, draw the cell based on Compartments I and VII from Part 4 of the lab. Label all key components and illustrate the flow of electrons as well as ions through the salt bridge. a. If Compartment I was replaced by Compartment VIII, what type of cell b. c. would this become? Which compartment would be the anode and which would be the cathode? What material could be used for the electrode in Compartment VIII? Typically, in a cell drawing the anode is shown on the left and the cathode on the right, Indicate the direction of flow for each of the following in a newly drawn cell where the anode was placed on the right and the cathode on the left. 2. a. b. c. The flow of electrons The flow of cations through the salt bridge The flow of anions through the salt bridge What change in the potential shown on the voltmeter would be expected in a cell with the anode on the right and the cathode on the left?Explanation / Answer
1)a if we replace 1 by viiI the the cell will change into an electrolytic cell since in electrolytic cell we always use carbon (graphite) non reactive electrode.
b) electrode containing the metal strip will be anode and the carbon rod will be cathode.
In this case cu electrode will be anode.
C) In compartment 8 we can use unreactive elements like platinum and graphite.
2)
a)flow of electron will be from anode to cathode that is from right to left
b)flow of cation will be towards left
c) flow of anion will be towards right
Potential difference will be same since it doesn't depends on the direction of electrodes.
