Question

How do you solve this? Please include an explanation when you solve this because I have no idea how to go about it/ why. I will up rate you.

The answer key says the answer is D, but i dont understand how work can be done on the system and the system be losing energy? I thought when work is done on the system energy flows into the system, making it endothermic, and making q positive?

Thank you

What are the signs of q and w for the following process at P 1 atm? A. q and w are both positive. B. q and w are both negative. C. q is positive and w is negative. D. q is negative and w is positive.

Explanation / Answer

gas is changing to solid
This is deposition and this process loses energy
We know this as when solid changes to liquid and liquid to gas , it needs energy (Imagine ice changing to steam)

Volume of product will be less than reactant as gas occupy more volume
So, this is compression and delta V is negative
work done = -P*delta V
since delta V is negative, work done is positive

Answer: D
