Question
There are two steps in the extraction of copper metal from chalcocite, a copper ore. In the first step, copper(I) sulfide and oxygen react to form copper(I) oxide and sulfur dioxide: 2 Cu2S(s) + 302(g) > 2Cu20(s) + 2 S02(g) In the second step, copper(I) oxide and carbon react to form copper and carbon monoxide: Cu2O)Cs)2Cu(s)+CO(8) Suppose the yield of the first step is 86% and the yield of the second step is 60%. Calculate the mass of oxygen required to make 8.0 kg of copper Be sure your answer has a unit symbol, if needed, and is rounded to the correct number of significant digitsExplanation / Answer
Theoretical yield of copper in the second step = ( 8.0 x 100) / 60 = 13.333 kg
Number of mol of Copper = 13333 / 63.546 = 209.8 moles
So the number of moles of Cu2O required = (209.8) / 2 = 104.9 mol
Now the theoretical yield of Cu2O in first step = (104.9 x 100) / 86 = 121.99 mol
So the number of moles of O2 required = (121.99 x 3) / 2 = 182.99 mol
Mass of oxygen = 182.99 x 31.999
= 5855.5 g
= 5.8 kg
