6. MOLE CONCEPT Find the formula mass of each of the following substances a. Lithium chloride b. Aluminum carbonate 1. 2. How many atoms are in each of the following? a. 7.75 moles of methane, CH b. 0.0888 mole of carbon monoxide Calculate the mass of each of the following: a. 57.1 mol acetic acid, HGH,O b. 4.30 x 10" molecules of nickel(ll) chloride 3. 4. A person who sweetens coffee with two teaspoons of sugar, GaH2On, uses about 0.65 g. How many sugar molecules is this? Calculate the percentage composition of each compound a. Aluminum sulfate b. Sodium phosphate 5. 6. A component of protein called threonine has an approximate molar mass of 120 g/mole. If the percent composition is as follows, find the empirical and molecular formulas of threonine? C 40.33%, H 7.616%, O-40.29% and N-11.76% 7. Tetraethylead, the "lead" additive in leaded gasoline, has a percent composition by mass of 64.06% Pb, 29.71 % C and 6.23% H. What is the empirical formula of tetraethyllead? A 50.51 g sample of a compound made from iron and oxygen is decomposed. Analysis of the products showed that 35.33 g of iron atoms were produced. Find the empirical formula of this compound. 8. 9, A coolant widely used in automobile engines is 38.70% carbon, 9.74% hydrogen, and 51.56% oxygen. Its molar mass is 62.07 g/mol. What is the molecular formula of the compound? ole Concept Page 175Explanation / Answer
1. Molar mass or formula mass is the mass of 1 mole of a compound, or g/mol.
(a). Lithium has a molar mass of 6.9g/mol and chlorine has a molar mass of 35.5g/mol. Lithium chloride is LiCl (Li+ because all group 1 metals form 1+ ions and Cl- because all halogens form 1- ions) so 6.9+35.5=42.4 g/mol.
(b) Now we are looking at Al2(CO3)3. Next evaluate each atom by number, so we have two aluminum atoms, 3 carbon atoms, and 9 oxygen atoms. Now look at a periodic table. Aluminum weighs about 27, carbon about 12, and oxygen about 16. 2*27+3*12+9*16=234 g/mol.
