Question

Hello experts! Attached below you may find one problem with several items to be completed, please answer the question with its respective items as the entire set will account just for 1 problem according to chegg's policies. I will prefer the answer to be stepwise (drawing detail chair conformations) with legible handwritten work/drawing/text (I have some dyslexia problems and I will be really glad if you could support me with the previous request). Thank you so much for your time and effort experts!

PRONLEM TO BE SOLVED

2. (4 pt) Which Molecular Formula best fits the below data, CDCl is the solvent. CDCl, 70 160 150 140 130 120 110 100 90 80 70 60 50 40 30 ppm D) C&H1202; E) C&Hi0C; B) C9H1302 C) CsH12 True or False. A mass spectrum can only give you the molecular weight of a compound.

Explanation / Answer

Hi,

The first of the above spectra is DEPT 90 which shows a peak for each CH carbon present in the molecules, which is 4 here.

The second of the above spectra is DEPT 135 which shows a positive peak for CH and CH3while a negative peak for each CH2carbons. Hence from this, number of CH and CH3 carbons present in the molecule =6, and number of CH2 carbon = 1. Since n(CH) =4 we know already from DEPT 90, n(CH3) =2

The lasr spectra is normal NMR which shows peak for a total 8 carbon atoms present in the molecules. Since one carbon peak is ~170 ppm, this should correspond to COO (COOR/COOH) functional group.

Now from the above analysis, the molecular formula should be = (CH)4 (CH2)1 (CH3)2 COO = C8H12O2
option (D)

Part B, False, it also provides you details of fragments present in molecules, i.e. very useful to predict functional groups.
