Postlab Questions: To receive full credit, you must SHOW ALL YOUR WORK!! Refer to the standard potential table given to you in your lab manual to answer these questions eiven to you in your lab manual to answer these questions. 1. Complete the following table. If the species listed can be used as an oxidizing agent, write YES in the oxidizing agent column and fill in the reduction half reaction. If the species cannot be used as an oxidizing agent, Write NO in oxidizing Determine if the species can be used as a reducing agent (write yes/no) and write the half reaction if it is yes. agent column and Oxidizing agent? Reduction half Reducing agent? Oxidation half- reaction reaction Vo Fe Mno Br2 H,S 2. Indicate whether each of the following statements is True or False and explain why T/F Tve a. Chromium metal can dissolve in dilute HC oalrab. Iron metal will reduce Fe to Fe Explain: d. Oxygen in moist air can oxidize Fe", to Fr Explain e.Mercury metal will dissolve in HNO, but not in HCI. Explain: f. Tin metal will reduce Co, but not Sn". Explain: 130Explanation / Answer
From the table
e. mercury dissolves in HNO3 but not in HCl. Cl- is a weaker oxidizing agent as comapred to NO3- when in concentrated form. Thus, in high concentration NO3- is able to oxidize Hg and dissolves in solution whereas, Cl- does not oxidize and thus Hg does not dissolve in HCl.
f. Looking at the standard reduction potential chart, the higher the species in the chart, the better oxidizing agent and more reactive it is. Thus, Sn metal reduces (reducing agent) Co2+ but not Sn4+.
Rest of the work looks good.
