Question

Explain what you think is occurring at the molecular-level with the molecules, atoms, and/or ions that accounts for the macroscopic observations described in each of the situations below. For each situation, draw a molecular-level picture that accompanies this SOLID DOES NOT DISSOLVE WHEN PLACED IN WATER; CONDUCTIVITY MEASUREMENT IS ZERO. SOLID COMPLETELY DISAPPEARS WHEN PLACED IN WATER; CONDUCTIVITY MEASUREMENT IS ZERO. SOLID COMPLETELY DISAPPEARS WHEN PLACED IN WATER; CONDUCTIVITY MEASUREMENT IS SOMEWHERE BETWEEN 100 AND 2000 mu S/CM. SOLID COMPLETELY DISAPPEARS WHEN PLACED IN WATER; CONDUCTIVITY MEASUREMENT IS OVER 5000 mu S/CM.

Explanation / Answer

The conductivity of a solution depends upon the concentration of ion formation, more the formation of ions more will be the conductivity

in the Ist observation the conductivity is said to be zero, means that at this stage the molecules are attached with each other but not got ionize so the conductivity is zero means the molecules are intact with each other,

M(s)------> M(aq)

similar case is also observed in the observation II the solid gets completely disappear but not as formed the ion so the conductivity of it is zero

M(s)------> M(aq)

but in observation 3 the conductivity is said to be 100 - 2000 miuS/cm here the formation of ion has taken place due the conduction of electricity is seen

M(aq)------> M+(aq) +   M -(aq)

In observation 4 the conductivity is 5000 miuS/cm here the more formation of ions has taken place due to which the conductivity of solution is more.
