Question

Explain what you think is occurring at the molecular-le and/or ions that accounts for the macroscopic observe OBSERVATION 1: Solid does not dissolve when placed in water; conductivity MEASUREMENT IS ZERO. OBSERVATION 2: SOLID COMPLETELY DISAPPEARS WHEN PLACED IN WATER; CONDUCTIVITY MEASUREMENT IS ZERO. OBSERVATION 3: SOLID COMPLETELY DISAPPEARS WHEN PLACED IN WATER; CONDUCTIVITY MEASUREMENT IS SOMEWHERE BETWEEN 100 AND 2000 mu S/CM. OBSERVATION 4: SOLID COMPLETELY DISAPPEARS WHEN PLACED IN WATER; CONDUCTIVITY MEASUREMENT IS OVER 5000 mu S/CM.

Explanation / Answer

1. Pure water does not conduct electricity. When an insoluble compound like rubber. It will not dissolve in water and also the conductivity will not increase. Rubber does not dissociate as ions in water, thus conductivity will remain zero.

2. Add sugar to pure water. The sugar dissolves in water but it does not dissociate inot ions. Thus, conductivity will remain zero.

3. Add baking soda to water. It will dissolve in water. But it does not dissociate completely into ions. Thus, the conductivity will not increase much.

4. Add NaCl to water. NaCl dissolves and dissociates completely in water. So, the conductivity of the solution will increase very much.
