Question

Thermodynamics

Determine the heat formation for ethylene given the following information. A 3 kg calorimeter with a specific heat of 0.42 joules per gram-degree celsius was used to measure the heat formation of ethylene; the initial temperature recorded was 25.15-degree celsius . The mass of the water used was 5959 grams with a specific heat of 4.18 joules per gram-degree celsius. The 0.5 moles of carbon and 0.5 moles of hydrogen were used; the final temperature recorded of the calorimeter was found to be 24.65-degree celsius.

Explanation / Answer

calorimeter mass = 3 kg = 3000 g

specifiic heat of calorimeter = 0.42 j/g.c

initial temperature of calorimeter = T1 = 25.15 C

final temperature of calorimeter = T2 = 24.65 c

DT = 25.15 - 24.65 = 0.5 c

mass of water used = 5959 g

specifiic heat of water = 4.18 j/g.c

2C + 2H2 ---> C2H2

amount of heat released (Q) = mcal*scal*DT + MWATER*Swater*DT

              = 3000*0.42*0.5+5959*4.18*0.5

              = 130.84 kj

no of mole of C2H2 produced = 0.5 mole

so that,

DH formation of C2H2 = -130.84/0.5 = -261.68 Kj/mol
