Part 3: Effect ofTemperature on Cell Potential Focus Questions: 1) How does temperature affect the cell potential of a) the iron and copper(II) reaction and b) the zinc and copper(ID reaction? 2) What are your experimental values for AHo, ASo, and AG for these reactions? Are they in agreement with the theoretical values? Discuss any sources of experimental error. Experimental Procedure: 1. Construct one of the following cells (you will be assigned one) Fe(s) Fe2 (aq, 1M)II Cu2 (aq, 1M)ICu(s) Zn(s)lzn2 (aq, 1M)ll Cu2 (aq, 1M)ICu(s) Do not connect the electrodes to the voltmeter yet! Remember to clean the electrodes. 2. You will be assigned one of three temperatures (5 °CO50 oC or 75 oC). a) 5 °C water bath: 1. Using ice and tap water make an ice-water bath in a 600 mL beaker. 2. Monitor the temperature of the ice-water bath. When the temperature falls below 5 °C, place your cel inside the ice-water bath. Begin monitoring the temperature of the solution inside the porous cup. Try to cool it down as much as possible. Experiment 16
Explanation / Answer
Q1
Temperature affects cell potential since it will dissociate in higher/lower amounts the salts in solution
a)
iron --> will be more soluble if T increases
Cu --> will be more soluble
the overall effect is decrease in T since the ion in solution which is favoured is the one in the left side...
b)
for zinc and copper reaction, the T increases will giv ea higher E°cell reading, since th solution favours the right side
