Question
In the laboratory a "coffee cup" calorimeter, or constant pressure calorimeter, is frequently used to determine the specific heat of a solid, or to measure the energy of a solution phase reaction. A student heats 66.41 grams of aluminum lo 98.82 degree C and then drops it into a cup containing 79.89 grams of water at 22.32 degree C. She measures the final temperature to be 34.32 degree C. The heat capacity of the calorimeter (sometimes referred to as the calorimeter constant) was determined in a separate experiment to be 1.77 J/degree C. Assuming that no heat is lost to the surroundings calculate the specific heat of aluminum.Explanation / Answer
In this experiment;
- Heat lost by Al= heat absorbed by water+ Calrometer
- cmdT (metal) = cmdT (water) + c* dT
-c * 66.41 g (34.32- 98.82) C = 79.89 g * 4.184 J/g c (34.32- 22.32) C + 1.77 J/ c* (34.32- 22.32) C
C* 4283.445 = 4011.11+ 21.24
C = 4032.35/4283.445
= 0.94 J/ g -C
