Question

Hi attemptin to solve this redox equation , i was able to solve question a and b but got stuck on question c , the tutor at the time said use ICFF Table followed by the ICE table to find the equalibrium concentration of Co2+ and In 3+ ... The correct answer is 6.32x10^-3 M Co and 0.996 M In3+

Assuming you start with 1.5M CoCI2 and pure indium metal, calculate the Cot 6.22 to M equilibrium concentration of Co2 and In n 1.0L of solution k is too la 0.5) I.SM 2 In 2x 3x I Two

Explanation / Answer

c. ICE table

Concentration of metal In and Co are not considered in equilibrium constant K equation. Also at the start no In3+ exists.

         3Co2+ + 2In <==> 3Co + 2In3+

I            1.5          -               -           -

C        -3x           -               -          +2x

E        1.5-3x        -               -            2x

So,

K = [In3+]^2/[Co2+]^3

3.95 x 10^6 = (2x)^2/(1.5 - 3x)^3

Solving for x we get change in concentration at equilibrium,

so at equilibrium,

concentration of [Co2+] = 1.5 - 3x

concentration of [In3+] = 3x
