I need help with a lab procedure. I have a 1:1 mix of 1,4-dichlorobenzene and 4-aminobenzoate I need to separate and recrystallize. we have to dissolve our mixture in diethyl ether and then I planned on using HCl and a separatory funnel to do a liquid liquid separation. after that I believe my base (the ethyl 4-aminobenzoate) can be isolated and recrystallized using sodium hydroxide and then vacuum filtered and washed with cold water then further purified by dissolving in hot water and brought back to room temp and refiltered. For the 1,4-dichlorobenzene the impurity in the layer I thought would be water so i could use a drying agent like sodium sulfate, then transfer the remaining liquid portion into a bulb to be put on the rotovap and remove remaining water but this woild leave a liquid product. Is there a way to recrystallize 1,4-dichlorobenzene to get a solid product?

1,4 dichlorobenzene can recrystallized using the combination of a polar solvent and non -polar solvent. Methanol and dichloromethane can be the better choice. Dissolve the compound in dichloromethane and eveporate the dichloromethane to minimum quantity (make sure that the compound is still in solution). After that add excess of methanol (The moment ethanol is added it might start precipitation. In order to avoid it, it is better to heat so that the precipitation does not occur immediately) Then allow it to stand so that all the dichloromethane is evoperated during which nice crystals of the 1,4 dichlormethane can be seen. Vacum filteration under cold conditions would yield better yield
