Question
A major reaction that takes place in the atmosphere is: 2NO(g) + O_2(g) 2NO_2(g) The equilibrium constant, K_c, of this reaction at a temperature of 500 K is 6.9 10^5. A reaction having a volume of L was filled at 500 K with 0.030 mol of NO, 0.50 mol of O_2 and 0.40 mol of NO_2 At this point: The reaction will proceed to the right The reaction will proceed to the left The reaction will initially proceed to the right but after some time it will proceed to the left No net reaction will take place Cannot tellExplanation / Answer
2NO + O2 = 2NO2
Kc --> 6.9*10^5
V = 1 L
[NO] = 0.03
[O2] = 0.5
[NO2] = 0.4
so..
Q = [NO2]^2 / [NO]^2[O2]
calcualte quotient
Q = (0.4^2) / ((0.03^2)(0.5))
Q = 355.5555 = 3.5*10^2
since Q < K
this must go to the LEFT side
