Question

12) Recall from the text that electricity is a secondary rather than a primary energy resource, meaning it requires some other energy source to produce.

a) Describe the basic problem with trying to replace some of our need for oil by using electricity that is produced by burning coal.

b) Explain what needs to be done in order for us to use clean forms of renewable energy (wind, solar, geothermal, tidal, etc.) rather than coal to produce the additional electricity we need.

c) Large quantities of electricity can also be produced using nuclear power. Describe some of the problems with expanding the use of nuclear power in the U.S.

Explanation / Answer

electricity is produced by burning coal , by wind , by water, by nuclear reactions in nuclear reactors etc. , means its need another resource to produce so we can call it secondary energy resource rather than primary.

a) when we trying to replace some of our need for oil with the electricity, we face some problems, firstly we are not familiar with it because we are using oil as a energy resource for a log time , its about the trust issues on the electricity technolgies rather than oil. secondly, technology for using the electricity rather than oil is not so advanced which can take place of oil and thirdly, pollution will be more higher in producing electricity by the burning coal than oil.

b) Alternative energy resoures for producing eletricity are solar power, thermal power, wind power, water power, geothermal power , nuclear power, which provides clean energy because producing electricity by coal burning is produce pollution in much of amount. these energy resources provides clean energy but they need a high quality maintanance and advanced technologies , and the operators who knows the complexities of that technology.

c) nuclear power plant is the very popular and good energy resource to produce electricity. but for there establishment there is very challnges are present ike permission from the international community because some countries used this technology to develop atomic bombs and the lots of money is required to established a nuclear power plant and a higher technology required and scientist as a operator who knows the process of it. another challenge is the threat of nuclear accident like fukushima accident in japan.
