Question

12) RESEARCH REQUIRED! Make sound financial decorating decisions. a. ( 15 pts) Get on the internet or look in the real estate or “home finder” section of a newspaper. You will need to find the floor plan of a house or apartment you like with at least three rooms. If this is too hard, draw a sketch of the floor plan of wherever you live. You will need to use a tape measure to find and label the dimensions of each room. Attach the sketch or a printout, and label the rooms as Room 1, Room 2, or Room 3. Find the area of three rooms. Show your work here. Room 1 ________ Room 2 ________ Room 3 ________ Now go to www.homedepot.com and pick a nice wood flooring product to redecorate the floors of those rooms. The cost of the flooring products is usually given in $ per square foot. Show work. How many square feet of flooring do you need to complete your project? __________ How much will that cost? __________ b. (6 pts) You love your new floor. Two years later, someone from the Home and Garden Network shows up and tells you your decorating scheme is “sooo 2010’s”, and tells you that you need to redo the wood floors with bright orange shag carpet. The product he tells you to use costs $35 per square yard. Notice the units here… carpet is usually sold by the square yard. How much will it cost to cover your floors with this carpet? Show work. Cost of carpeting: __________ c. (15 pts) Now we need to repaint the walls. You will need to use the floor plan for your three rooms. Since you are painting the walls, you will need to find the area of each wall in each room. To make life easier, use 10 feet as the height in each room. This is higher than normal. Most residential walls are eight feet tall. If we use ten, we should end up buying a little extra paint – a good thing if we accidentally spill some. Show work. Wall surface area of Room 1: _________ Wall surface area of Room 2: _________ Wall surface area of Room 3: _________ Total surface area of walls: __________ Next, go to a website where they sell gallons of paint, and pick one to paint your walls. What brand/color did you pick? _________________ How much does it cost per gallon? ________ Different types of paint cover different amounts of wall. A gallon of paint will typically cover 400 square feet. You can read the description of the paint you choose, or use 400 for your calculations. How many gallons will you need to buy to paint your walls? Round up to the next largest whole gallon if you get a decimal amount… you don’t want to run out of paint! Show ALL work. Number of gallons needed: __________ Finally, how much will it cost you to buy the paint you need for this project? ____________ BONUS: What if we needed to repaint the ceilings, too? Could you use the work in question 12 to come up with the amount of paint you would need to buy? How?

Explanation / Answer

Room 1: 10*20= 200 sq ft

Room 2: 10*25= 250 sq ft

Room 3: 10*20= 200 sq ft

From the website, I selected Heritage Mill Ashen Gray for my flooring. Its cost is $3.98/ sq ft. I need 650 sq ft of flooring to complete my project.

The cost of redecorating my flooring with the new one is : $3.98/sq ft * 650sq ft = $2587

Cost of carpeting is $35 per sq yard= $35/9 sq ft= $3.88/sq ft

Therefore the total cost of carpeting for me will be = $3.88 * 650= $2527.77

My walls are 10ft tall

And the length*breadth of rooms is:

1. 20*10

2. 25*10

3. 20*10

therefore, wall surface area of room 1 = 20*10*2+ 10*10*2= 600 sq ft (multiplying by 2 because 2 walls each with length and breadth)

wall surface area of room 2= 25*10*2+10*10*2= 700 sq ft

wall surface area of room 3= 20*10*2+ 10*10*2= 600 sq ft

Total surface area of walls= 600+700+600= 1900 sq ft

I went to Asian Paints website and selected Sugared Peach as my color for all the three rooms. And it costs me $2.08 per 200 ml.therefore, $0.0104 per ml= $39.36 per gallon.

The total surface area of my walls is 1900 sq ft therefore, I will need 1900/400= 4.75 , rounding upto 5 gallons of the color.

It cost me $39.36 per gallon therefore for 5 gallons, the total cost will be $39.36*5 = $196.8

If we have to paint the ceilings too, the surface area of ceilings of each room will be 200, 250, 200 sq ft.

total = 650 sq ft

gallons reqd = 650/400= 1.625 rounding upto 2 gallons

the cost for the paint for the ceilings will be $39.36*2= $78.72
