Question
An inventor claims to have designed a refrigeration system which uses a heat engine to drive the refrigerator compressor. The heat engine withdraws 1000 kW from combustion gases at 2000 degree C, delivers work to the refrigerator compressor and rejects 200 kW of heat to the surrounding atmosphere. The refrigerator system uses the work produced by the heat engine to withdraw 750 kW of heat from the refrigerator and deposit energy into the atmosphere. Is this system possible if the atmospheric temperature is 25 degree C and the refrigerator temperature is -50 degree C?Explanation / Answer
rate of Wout of the heat engine = Qh - Qc
= 1000 kW - 200 kW
= 800 kW
Initial temperature of refrigerator = -50 oC = 223.15 K
Final Temperature = 25 C = 298 K
COP of refrigerator = ( 223.15 / 298- 223.15 ) = 2.975
COP = Qc / W
Qc = 800 kW x2.975 == 2380.66 kW which is greater than 750 kW.So, it is possible
