Question

25o0 calores c) A man needs to consume about 2500 dietary calories per day. Given that 1 kl =0.239 dietary calories, how many sweets must a man consume in order to meet his daily calorific requirement? Sherbet produces a slight fizzing sensation in the mouth when tartaric acid reacts with the sodium hydrogencarbonate to make carbon dioxide. The reaction is given below. HO2C CO2H HO2C CO2H HO OH +2H20+2CO In a laboratory experiment, one sherbet lemon sweet produced 6,0 m) of carbon dioxide d)) Calculate the minimum masses of tartaric acid necessary to produce this volume of carbon dioxide. Assume that 1 mole of carbon dioxide occupies 24.0 L at room temperature and pressure. e) By making the appropriate substitutions for A, B, D and E in the structure shown below, how many different stereoisomers of tartaric acid are there? HO2C CO2H

Explanation / Answer

d) From the reaction we can see that 1 mole of tartaric acid produces 2 moles of carbondioxide.

Now given that 1 mole of carbon dioxide occupies 24 L volume at room temperature and pressure.

So, 2 moles of carbondioxide will occupy 48 L at room temperature and pressure.

So, 48 L carbondioxide is produced by 1 mole of tartaric acid.

So, 6ml CO2 is produced by 0.006 / 48 moles of tartaric acid

Molecular formulae of tartaric acid is C4H6O6

Hence molecular mass = 12*4 + 1*6 + 16*6 = 90 g

Hence required mass of tartaric acid = No of moles * Molecular mass = (0.006/48) *90 = 0.01125 gm
