Question
Not a mathematical problem, but I need help understandind these.
1) What situations have you encountered with a rate determining step? You may want to include several examples to be able to choose from below
2) Now, can you think of a rate determining process example that has a fast forward and backward process before it?
3) Describe the fast forward process that would occur before your rate determining step
4) Describe the fast backward process that occurs before your rate determining step
5) Describe the fast non rate determining process that occurs after the rate limiting step in your analysis
Explanation / Answer
1) The slowest step of the reaction is the rate determining step in a chemical reaction that takes place in a number of elementary steps.
example :
Nitric oxide reacts with oxygen to give nitrogen dioxide
2NO(g) +O2 -->2NO2 (g)
proposed mechanism in two steps:
Step 1)2NO(g) <-->N2O2(g) (fast process as equilibrium is reached quickly)
Step 2) N2O2(g)+O2(g)--->2NO2(g)(slow process so rate determining)
N2O2 is the intermediate,it appears in both the steps but not in the net equation
3) Keq=equilibrium constant=k1/k-1
where k1=rate of forward rxn ,k-1=rate of reverse rxn for Step 1)
At equilibrium ,rate of forward rxn =rate of reverse rxn=constant,No change in concentration of reactant or product takes place at this state. The equilibrium reaches very fast , and is reversible
4)
At equilibrium ,rate of forward rxn =rate of reverse rxn=constant,The equilibrium reaches very fast , and is reversible
