Question
Complete your required discussion prompt The fuoride rinse in dental offices usually contains sodium fluoride. Sodium fluoride can be prepared from the reaction between sodium metal and fluorine gas. Which properly represents the balanced chemical equation for this reaction? A Na(s) + F2(g) NaF2(s) B Na(s) + F (g) NaF(s) C. 7Na(s)+F(g) Na7F(s) D 2Na(s) + F2(g)-2Na2F(s) E 2Na(s) + F2(g) 2NaF(s) Why is it important to understand this equation? Show the equation 3 Distinguish between strong and weak acid List some clinical uses of these acids and write equations for their dissociation in water 4 Did you find any of these to be a challonge? Why or why not?Explanation / Answer
The balanced equation for the reaction is
E. 2Na(s) + F2(g)---------> 2NaF
Na is an s block element with valency 1, and its a electropositive element I,e can give electrons to other species hence it can combines with one atom which is electronegative in nature
F is p block element which is highly electronegative and can accept an electron from an electropositive element like Na.
Hence Na+ and F- gives NaF salt an ionic compound.
But F doesn't exist as an atom it exists as a molecule as it's a gas I,e F2
Hence the reaction will be Na + F2 to give NaF salt, inorder to balance the reaction to get a stoichiometric equation Na atoms should be balanced by 2 followed by NaF balanced by 2. Hence the above equation is correct for the given reaction.
