Question

Complete these exercises after reading the experiment but before coming to the labora- tory to do it. Determine the number of moles of reagent in the following solutions: a. 25.00 mL of 0.10 M acetic acicd 1. b. 5.55 mL of 0.092 M NaOH C. 0.50 mL of 0.087 M HCl 2. A buffer solution contains 0.120 M acetic acid and 0.150 M sodium acetate. How many moles of acetic acid and of sodium acetate are present in 50.0 mL of solution? a. If we add 5.55 mL of 0.092 M NaOH to the solution in part a., how many moles of acetic acid, sodium acetate, and NaOH will be present after the reaction is done? b. c. If we add 0.50 mL of 0.087 M HCI to the solution in part a., how many moles of acetic acid, sodium acetate, and HCI will be present after the reaction is done? 3. Determine the pH you expect to find for the three solutions in Question 2.

Explanation / Answer

Ans 1 :

The number of moles = molarity x volume of solution in Liter

So here :

a) Molarity = 0.10 M

volume = 25 mL = 0.025 L

number of moles = 0.10 x 0.025

= 0.0025 moles

b) Molarity = 0.092 M

Volume = 5.55 mL = 0.00555 L

number of moles = 0.092 x 0.00555

= 0.0005106 moles

c) Molarity =0.087 M

Volume = 0.50 mL

number of moles = 0.087 x 0.0005

= 0.0000435 moles
