Chapter 3 Discussion

What motivates people? Why are people motivated? What motivates you on the job? Is it the same thing that motivates your peers? Why does a person go through all the scrutiny and open their lives to the public to run for public office? Why did Joe Gibbs return to the NFL after already winning the Super Bowl a couple of times and having a huge success as a NASCAR owner to again coach the Washington Redskins? Why do these people do this? For money? For power? For achievement? For self-satisfaction?

Our authors state in chapter 3 that the study of motivation assists leaders to understand what prompts people to innate action. What influences their choices of action, and why they persist in that action over time? And they do this by presenting three classic content motivation theories, reinforcement and equity theories, and the carrot and stick approach to motivation, the concept of empowerment.

Discussion question: What is your motivation theory? What major methods, techniques, and so on, do you plan to use on the job as a manager to increase motivation and performance?

Explanation / Answer

A simple definition of motivation is the ability to change behavior. It is a drive that compels one

to act because human behavior is directed toward some goal. Motivation is intrinsic (internal); it

comes from within based on personal interests, desires, and need for fulfillment.

"Why is employee motivation important?" is because in today's down economy, it's more

important than ever to have a motivated workforce. That's because a motivated employee is a

productive employee. And a productive employee is a more profitable employee. When people

aren't motivated, they become less productive, less creative, less of an asset to the company. Now

more than ever, companies need motivated employees.

Yes, I definitely agree. Managers have to be very careful about their own attitudes. If they

demonstrate a negative attitude toward their workers, their impact can be tremendously negative

for the organization. That's because poor management attitudes negatively affect their employees'

motivation to work. Therefore, they should monitor their personal communications with

employees, even emails and phone calls, and seek feedback from employees on how they are

perceived as managers. I feel that managers should place their attitudes and the monitoring of

them in a high priority.

When it comes to human nature we all like to be appreciated. And in business this is no different.

I would use this employee motivation technique can daily; and I feel it would be effective. In my

past, some leaders have used fear tactics or other bad management practices. These ways just

create a negative atmosphere. In today's world there are so many negative things going on. So it

is no surprise that it affects the workplace. Leaders need to make a commitment to appreciate

employees. Don't just say "good job", go out of your way by buying coffee and donuts or lunch.

The best leaders are those who can lead and direct without misuse of their power. They must be

able to inspire others in a direction or greater good. They must be strong enough to stand firm in

decision making and leading others without an egotistical attitude. A great team leader will

encourage others to brain storm and contribute to the whole. They also lead by example and

intelligently. They are also good listeners. Charisma helps a team leader. I also feel a leader is

someone who can see each team members' strong suit(s) ie: organizer, communicator, leader,

researcher, presenter, etc., focusing on the positive and using each team member accordingly for

their special skill to accomplish the desired goal.
