Question
At a local community meeting in a poor segregated neighborhood, Latino, African American, and Asian residents discussed government plans to build another highway in the neighborhood. They were worried about air pollution and health problems for their children and neighbors who were elderly. Residents complained about dirty exhaust from trucks that drove through the neighborhood and transit and school buses that idled throughout the day. A Department of Transportation (DOT) official at the meeting stated the planned highway would not increase air pollution. Town officials stated that the new highway could help promote economic development and bring in new industries, businesses, and consumer traffic. A local physician observed a number of chronic health problems in the community. The residents were against the new highway because they already had a coal-fired plant, incinerator, and an industrial corridor filled with petrochemical factories. They were tired of being dumped on. What are possible contaminants/stressors of concern in the neighborhood. What are the health effects of these contaminants/stressors? Please describe in detail. 2. Describe why this situation may be an example of environmental injustice. Please provide details. 3. What type of exposure assessment would you use to investigate the effects of such contaminants on human health? What are the strengths and weaknesses of this approach? Provide details.
