Question

Is the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) dead? President Trump and the GOP want to end Obamacare. Although Congress has not been able to pass any legislation that would end Obamacare. Trump has administratively started dismantling Obama Care.Should we go back to the old system of employee sponsored health care? If the employer does not offer any medical coverage, then the individual or family has to pay out of their pocket for medical insurance. Should we adopt the Canadian system of a single payer (See attached article)? Or should we adopt a hybrid system like the Swiss? Or should we keep Obamacare and tweak it to keep costs reasonable? The other problem is that Medicare will be bankrupt in 5 to 10 years. How do you save Medicare? The Republican plan has substantial cuts to Medicaid—the program for the poor and under Obamacare the working poor. The new Republican plan has major changes to Medicare that will mean seniors paying more. The essential fact in Health Care is—“There is no such thing as a free lunch”. The only way to save money is to reduce benefits. Period!!!! Or you are going to have to pay more in taxes, to get everyone covered at a reasonable price. Analyze the success/failure of Obamacare and if there is a plan that is a better alternative.

Explanation / Answer

Obamacare is the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010. Most people think it only affects health insurance, but it has already changed the way America delivers health care itself.

Pros of obamacare:

The biggest benefit of the ACA is that it slows the rise of health care costs. It does this by providing insurance for millions and making preventive care free.

It requires all insurance plans to cover 10 essential health benefits. These include treatment for mental health, addiction, and chronic diseases

It eliminates lifetime and annual coverage limits.

Insurance companies can no longer deny anyone coverage for pre-existing conditions. They can't drop them or raise premiums if beneficiaries get sick.

Cons of obamacare:

Three million to 5 million people lost their employment-based health insurance. Many businesses found it more cost-effective to pay the penalty and let their employees purchase insurance plans on the exchanges

Increased coverage raised overall health care costsin the short term.

Four million people chose to pay the tax rather than pay for coverage.

Three years after obamacare was approved, 54 percent of Americans opposed the Act. That led to Donald Trump's plan to repeal and replace it. Like every other plan,Obamacare has its own benefits and negative points.

The executive order President Trump signed last week might prove to be a better plan than obamacare.
The most significant change might involve the short-term plans.

These are plans that some people already buy if they’re between jobs or waiting for an open-enrollment period to start. Under Obamacare, these plans could only last three months, and they could not be renewed. The executive order and the new rules federal agencies create as a result might make them last up to a year and be renewable.
