Question
The arrow in the map below represents the position of the jet stream in winter. Use this map to answer the questions below. If the jet stream were to stay in this same position for most of winter, do you think the mountains in the western states (i.e., California, Washington etc.) would have a great ski season with cold temperatures and lots of snow pack or a poor ski season with warm temperatures and very small snow pack? Please provide your answer and a very brief explanation. Would you expect above normal, below normal, or near average temperatures in Illinois on a day where the jet stream took this path in winter? Provide your answer and a very brief explanation. Given the flow of the jet stream in the image above, in which state(s) would you expect to find a low- pressure system forming at the surface? Please place an "L" on the map over the state(s) that you expect a low-pressure system to form.Explanation / Answer
Answer:1
Jet streams are the blow of wind from west to east at high altitude (tropopause) between cold and hot air. If the same pattern follow by jet streams as shown in map it would effect as poor ski season in western states with small of snow. As the western region are lies under the hot region of jet stream line. The region lie above the jet stream line represent cold air region whereas the region lie below jet stream line represent hot air region.
Answer:2
As Illinois lies in cold air region means above the jet stream line, therefore there would be below normal temperature means cold temperature.
Answer 3:
As we know air blows from high pressure to low pressure, therefore according to shown jet stream line on map, Western region states are at high pressure and Eastern states are at low pressure.
