Question
Directions: The Treasure Valley suffers from Ozone pollution in the summer – primarily due to stationary sources (gas stations and processing plants,) and mobile sources that emit ozone precursors during high-temperature days. Reflect on this fact and then answer the following questions:
(a) With population expected to grow by 200% over the next 80 years, what does this mean for future air quality in the Treasure Valley?
(b) What will we have to do to move into compliance with the NAAQS, and improve air quality (and the quality of life) in the future?
Explanation / Answer
Air pollution is a serious threat to human. It causes serious diseases like asthma and cancer. Air pollution is increasing day by day with the increasing population. The population density has increased on a large scale and therefore the resources are being used carelessly by people and this has raised major concerns about the environment. Many programmes are started to lower the air pollution rate and they are working to some extent. It has been seen that the level of visible air pollution has decreased over time. But the concern here is that even the invisible pollution is harmful. If proper measures are not taken than the quality of air in future will be worse than it is today and population will be considered as the main cause of that.
(b)
Under the Clean Air Act, national ambient air quality standards (NAAQS) is responsible for setting standards for pollutants which are considered harmful to people and the environment.
We have to use the resources in proper manner. Use public transport instead of personal cars. We have to cooperate with the nature, it is our responsibility also to takecare of the resources. Whenever possible take your bicycle. We can plant more and more trees. So, we can help the NAAQS by contributing little things from our side.
