Question

Critique the following carbon mitigation wedge plan from the perspective of developing nations. Is this friendly to the growth of these nations? Make sure you completely dissect the plan with respect to cost, energy needs, and threat of famine. Your critique should be 100-words or less.

Wedge Strategy Sector Cost 1 Nuclear electricity Electricity $$ 2 Biofuels Biostorage/Trans $$ 3 Forest storage Biostorage $ 4 Solar electricity Electricity $$$ 5 Efficiency of power generation Electricity $ 6 Convert coal plants to natural gas Electricity $ 7 Efficiency of new buildings Electricity $ 8 Producing hydrogen with wind energy Trans/Heating $$$

Explanation / Answer

To avoid dramatic climate change, carbon emissions should be kept at a check. The carbon mitigation plan must be quantified. For developing countries with emerging and nascent infrastructure, compact urban form, and transport planning can encourage higher population densities and subsequently avoid lock in of high emission patterns for travel. These results underscore a significant potential urbanization wedge for reducing energy use in rapidly developing countries.

Cost will be higher for electricity obtained from solar energy and while producing hydrogen with wind energy. The other strategies are affordable though. Electricity obtained from nuclear energy will be difficult to implement with the permission of local people.

Electricity and biofuels are the mostly needed form of energies for any individual purpose and those methods should be implemented to minimise the cost. There is no threat to famine as a result of this mitigating wedge plan. Climate changes can cause famine, mitigating it won't.
