Critique the following article by answering three questions below.
Elbir, T., Mangir, N., Kara, M., Simsir, S., Eren, T., & Ozdemir, S. (2010). Development
of a GIS-based decision support system for urban air quality management in the city of
Istanbul. Atmospheric Environment, 44(4), 441-454.
1) What is the research method used in the evaluation?
2) What do you think about the adequacy of the research methods? Please elaborate your
thoughts.
3) Is the research outcome convincing? Please justify your thought.
Explanation / Answer
Research method used in the evaluation:
The system was totally dependant on CALMET/CALPUFF dispersing model system. Further research maps , associated database are used to estimate the pollution level according to the spatial distribution of pollutants, it was marked using GIS software.
CALPUFF model performance was analysed by comparing the predicted pollution concentration with ambient detected at the quality station. There are two important research method utilized in this system
1.RMSE (root of the mean square error)
2.index of agreement
What do you think about the adequacy of the research methods?
The research methods are innovative and unique in my view. Matching the result with the pre obtained ambient level will sure give a good result. Since the ambient level vary from location to location, this location collects data on various zone and it to have the option of GIS software, which will record a database of this system region wise.
In this model they have utilized some previously successful models too, they are CALPUFF/CALMET model these models requires the source to be described according to the emission inventory maintained by the system.Likewise CALMET model make use the local meteorological data , that includes wind speed, wind direction, temperature, cloud cover, ceiling height and humidity. All the above values and data are came into action via the methods
1.RMSE (root of the mean square error)
2.index of agreement
that gives extraordinary output for the model. So the methods used in the model are good enough for the success of this model.
Research Outcome:
In this article the emission patterns and distribution of city of Istanbu for the year 2007. The overall system states that the industry are the major causes for the pollution, which is around 83% on the whole.Next to the residential heat are the major cause that affecting PM10, It i around 52% of the total emission like wise, traffic, powerplant are on the following list that are responsible for various pollution cause.
The results are provided in terms of location wise with the help of maps and relative pollution level over the locations, also the concentration levels are determined more accurately, the results are extremely adequate to learn about the pollution range over istanbul city, also it can applicable for various locations too.
