Explanation / Answer
1. Evaluate the characteristics of e-commerce.
Answer:
The term e-commerce is made up of two distinct terms, ‘electronic’ and ‘commerce’. The term ‘electronic’ is related to the technical concept of IT. An object that is electronic is said to be run or utilized through electronic mediums and electronic devices such as a computer, the Internet or a television.
On the other hand, the term ‘commerce’ refers to the activities of buying and selling of products and services, performed by different businesses, individuals or countries. These activities are related to the transaction of money or other commodities. Thus, e-commerce deals with commercial activities that are performed through an electronic medium for the exchange of data.
Following are the main characteristics of e-commerce:
Virtual Existence: A virtual store for selling goods and services is quite easy to set up than a bricks and mortar store. With the help of e-commerce, businesses can be conducted through websites, social media, e-mails, etc.
Almost any product or service can be sold through e-commerce.
Availability: An online store is open all the time and every day (whenever we log in to the Internet), while a store situated in a building closes for an interval of time and may not be open on all the days of the week. The location barrier is also not applicable to e-commerce because this facility can be made available worldwide and can serve a number of people at the same time.
Time-Saving Approach: The commercial activities performed through electronic media are less time-consuming. This is because, in e-commerce, the user does not have to travel any physical distance to take part in these activities. The only distance that exists is the one between the end user and the network-enabled electronic device. It takes surprisingly less time to perform various trade and transaction activities in e-commerce.
Economical Process: E-commerce is an economical process, because it reduces the money and time that users usually spend. The seller does not have to maintain a physically existing store, thus, the cost of selling a product is less. Additionally, because products can be sold to the buyers at a lesser cost, the profit gains are higher.
Comfort for Buyers: In e-commerce, a buyer can perform a transaction or shop anytime, without spending a lot of time, money or effort, thus, the process is comfortable for the buyer. Also, business buyers can perform search for suppliers and bidding activities more comfortably than in a physical setup.
Comfort for Suppliers/Sellers: Sellers can advertise and promote their products in an e-marketplace at a lesser expense because of lesser consumption of time, cost and money.
