a. Since we know that distance between cities of Bolungarvik and Eskifjordur is about 897 km. It is also given that the local spreading rate of plate is 2-3 cm/pr year. If spreading rate is about 3 cm in therefore in 100 years the distance of spreading between the two plates increases to about 300 cm or 0.003 km. Therefore the distance between these two cities after 100 years will become 897+0.003=897.003km.

b. We know that the air distance between london and New York city is 5584.424 km. It is given that speed of the jet plane is about 900 km/hr. Time taken to cover the distance of 5584.424 km by the jet plane if the speed of the plane is 900 km/hr is 5584.424/900=6.2 hour. We also know that local spreading rate is 2-3 cm/yr. In 100 years there will be spreading of 300 cm or 0.003 km. Total air distance will increase to about 5584.424+0.003=5584.427km. There will be only negligible increase or the time will remain almost same to reach from New york to london after 100 years by the plane. The time taken to cover the distance of 5584.427km between the two cities after 100 years will be 5584.427/900=6.2 hr.
