Surface crust or subsurface structure is sufficient to decrease the rainwater penetration rate, to aggravate runoff and to cause loss of water. But when the surface of the soil is covered with litter, more water enters in to the soil and also the surface is protected from the force of raindrops. If the soil is protected by litter from the force of raindrops infiltration rate increases than where the surface is exposed.
In the figure we can directly observe that when the soil surface is covered with litter, there is rapid infiltration and very little runoff compared to the exposed soil surface. Also the litter covered soil is dark in color and contains high amount of moisture. The dark color is due to the presence of large amount of nutrients from the litter. This litter also acts as a wrap and helps to decrease the evaporation rate of the soil and to decrease the runoff.
But when the soil is surface is not covered with litter, the infiltration rate decreases and runoff and evaporation rate increase. And because of this the soil is very light.
